EPM DISEASE

This is what we know about it. There are plenty of websites and information out there on this disease. Our belief is that there is maybe more to know that has not yet been discovered.

Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis EPM Disease

EPM is a disease that horses get. This serious disease can be difficult to diagnose. There are other illnesses and diseases that have some of the same symptoms.

The disease is not transmitted from horse to horse. The protozoa spreads from opossums that get the organism from infected birds, (now they think other animals, even domestic cats may spread it). Then the infective stage of the organism/sporocysts, are passed in opossum feces, etc. The horse then comes into contact with the infective sporocysts while grazing, eating contaminated feed, or drinking water. The horse is the end host, so it is not contagious after that.
